On November 13, 2017, Head of AICS Cairo Office Felice Longobardi attended the last Steering Committee meeting, chaired by H.E. Khaled Fahmy, Minister of Environment, for the project titled “Solid Waste Management in Minya Governorate”. The initiative – proposed by the Ministry of Environment – is implemented by @UNDP Egypt and financed under the second phase of the @Italian-Egyptian Debt Swap Program (IEDS).
Being at its last stage of implementation, it has three main objectives: 1) Implement the SWM plans – which were designed as a main deliverable of the first phase – through introducing new environmentally sound and cost effective waste collection services, and waste treatment (recycling) and sanitary disposal technologies; 2) Develop and test a “Model of a Recycling Plant” for a typical rural Governorate, thorough public-private partnership; and 3) Analyze and evaluate replicability of the model to other rural Governorates in Egypt. The recycling plant in El Edwa (Minya Governorate) has been completed and is ready to be operated through a public-private partnership.
During the meeting, the Committee also discussed a new project that is under formulation and will be financed under the third phase of the IEDS.
